The Border (I)

2012

(Version française en bas de page)

Since my childhood, I have been excited about borders and mostly at their crossing and about what is located on the other side. It is due to my childhood games and my education, which have taught me that our garden comes to an end at a concrete place and that on the other side of the wattle-fence, of the ordinary fence, I am no longer at home, but in my neighbor’s territory, where „one should not go”. It is a logical conclusion. Whenever I was alone, everything made me cross them, explore what was forbidden and find out what happened beyond, hide myself and watch for consecutive hours, sitting on the branch of a tree, behind coppice and behind some bush.

Borders are fixed. Walls, barriers and lines are drawn. They divide us. They mark another place and the people beyond the barrier, the others, who are quite often not so good, not so nice-looking, demanding and envious in our opinion. We would be their grass, but greener. Here, I would like to mention the existence of our neighbor, of the other belfry, of the other district, of the other side and of the other world in which the Others live.

In our view, they disappear, become smaller and already are simply symbolic borders, which we cross with ease. Our borders have been abolished. There is easy and free movement. They are an earmark of the past, but in reality they simply have been relocated, becoming more distant from us, but stronger and more technological than before.

The borders of “walls” type represent barriers, placed by governments, in order to obstruct migrant/migration flows. These eternal fortified walls are erected, relocated and in reality never disappear. The same is with what has been forbidden – its crossing is temptation, but sometimes also struggle for survival. On the other hand, we must mention observation and prowling, so that one can obstruct every illegal crossing of borders. People, desired from this side of the barrier, start diligently to obstruct the passing of others, to inspect, block and draw. By means of archaic, even barbarian techniques, they smooth out and polish these accesses; set traps for traces and traps for proofs, whereas the other, illegal immigrant has ventured to cross them, by means of which, has dirtied and broken into our place of residence…

Now I am here, standing at the well-known border between USA and Mexico, Latin America. I am from the northern side, a popular destination. I walk past a triple metal barrier, a strong and highly erected fortified wall. There is nothing special. I hear the music and the life passing across space…and I imagine. Just under my feet, there is a path of sand, clean, washed, tamped and for this reason, it is very clean. My steps leave their mark just like a red hot iron on human skin. That’s right, but it is desired; several civil militias take care of it, using their own means, with harrows of tyres, old brushes for cleaning, as every method is good for the persecution of those-others, those-who have come from the South, in order to detect them and to make their life miserable. What would be America without them?

As an introduction to the show entitled „No need to shout” of Marie Richeux, broadcasted on France Culture channel, during which she introduced the guest geographer Stephane Rosière, this text about geo-politics was displayed on the wall:

„Nowadays walls separate. It seems that a wall is an unchanging reflective form, which divides two territories. A wall has been erected between both German states; a wall has been built between Israeli people and Palestinians. Walls – peacelines – erected in Belfast, or more recently in Baghdad. In the world in which free movement and globalization seem to be key words, it turns out that we are eye-witnesses mostly to the consolidation of borders, a direct consequence of migration flows. No matter how we call them, we must erect these walls, must finance their construction, their maintenance and paradoxically, their security… And, who has any benefit of these walls?”

—————–
